Look Your Ladder Over Carefully:
The last thing that you should do is take out an extension ladder and use it right away. Although it may have been stored in a safe manner since it was last used, it could have some structural problems and be compromised. It's always better to be safe than sorry, so take the time to examine your extension ladder for signs of trouble. Look closely for signs of cracking, rusting, bent or missing parts. Look over components like rungs, rivets and bolts and tighten them as needed. Make sure that the ladder isn't wet or sticky before putting it to use.
Set it Up the Right Way:
Simply slapping a ladder against the side of a house is not the best way to go about things. Instead, you should take care to set it in the safest way possible. Make sure that the surface upon which you are setting it is firm and level.
Climb it with Care:
Prior to placing even a foot on your ladder, ensure that every one of its sections are latched very securely to the rungs. Otherwise, one section could slide dangerously as you put your weight on it. Always climb your extension ladder while facing it; there's no reason to climb a ladder facing outward. At minimum, hold on with one hand at all times; ideally, hold on with two. Never carry bulky, heavy items up the ladder; use a tool belt to carry smaller items up with you. Always have somebody else hold the bottom of the ladder as you climb it, and while you are on it.
Beware of Hazards:
Finally, many people get into trouble on an Extension Ladder because they fail to check for common hazards first. Metal ladders and electricity do not mix, so make sure that your ladder is safely distanced from any electrical wires. Take care to look for wasp nests and other nasties as these can be a potential safety nightmare because they can blindside you and make you fall quickly. Never stand on the second-highest or highest rung, since it's all too easy to lose your balance. Be aware of your surroundings before, during and after using an extension ladder.
